Evening Herald Write up
Drums help students make themselves heard
PEOPLE who struggle to communicate have been learning about fun ways to make themselves heard.
Jo Richards runs a community music group using African drums to help people to learn new skills and gain confidence.
And she realised that people with conditions like Down's Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy can also benefit from the fun - and loud - music sessions.
"I set up a community drumming group three years ago as a way of having a bit of fun but teachers and therapists began coming along and realised that it was helping their own communications, learnings and social skills," said the 39-year-old from Elburton.
"From there I have set up many groups working with elderly communities, schools and health groups."
Armed with her drums, Jo takes her music throughout the city and has even performed at local events including Plymstock Festival and Plymouth Car Show.
Once a week the sound of drum beats can be heard at the Stoke Damerel Community Centre where Jo holds her special education needs course.
"I like to see the connection that rhythm can make with people who speak or don't speak, are blind, deaf or physically disabled," she said.
"Music is a universal language that we can all share.
And Jo added that many of those taking part don't even realise they are learning important communication skills.
"The students on this course really look forward to the classes and so do their support workers and carers," she said.
"They have so much fun they don't realise that they are communicating with one another using non-verbal skills."
